Homewood Residents / Public Works

Recycling Services

We provide recycling services to single family residences in the City of Homewood.

At this time we do not recycle at apartments, condominiums or businesses for the City of Homewood. Recycling is the most environmentally friendly way to dispose of household trash. We would like to thank you in advance for participating in this program.

There is no need for you to sort your recycling materials. All materials are sorted at our recycling center via conveyor belt. To preserve this equipment, we do not recycle glass.

The City of Homewood DOES NOT recycle the following items:

Glass

Phone Books

Styrofoam

The City of Homewood recycles the following items:

Newspapers

Colored newspaper inserts

Junk mail

Magazines

Cardboard boxes – only if broken down

Plastics #1 – milk jugs

Plastics #2 – soda and water type bottles

Household can goods – emptied and rinsed

All household aluminum – foil, soda cans, foil pans, if clean and free of debris

For those items you cannot recycle, you may wish to take them to the location below:

The Alabama Environmental Council organized and still runs the oldest nonprofit recycling center in the state. It processes about 600 tons of newspaper, glass, plastic, aluminum, mixed paper and cardboard a year. We helped launch curbside recycling programs, cosponsor Christmas tree recycling, promote recycling education in schools and low-income communities, and operate a recycling hotline.

Toll Free Recycling Hotline: 1-800-982-4364.

The AEC recycling center is located at 2431 2nd Avenue North and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Helpful brochures and staff are available to make the center more user-friendly. Thanks for recycling!

The Recycling Center will be accepting the following recyclable items:

Glass (all types, please remove any lids/tops and make sure they are washed out)
Mixed paper (cereal boxes, box packaged foods, phone books, magazines, office paper, junk mail, etc.)
Newspaper
Corrugated cardboard (broken down)
Steel, aluminum, & tin cans
Plastics 1-7 (bottles only, lids removed, contents emptied)
